Metabones Sony Guide

Sony has been creating quite a buzz with their mirrorless cameras like the A7S II and A7R II and video cameras like the PXW-FS5 and PXW-FS7. If you want to try these cameras but don't want to give up your Canon or Nikon glass, we have you covered! Here's a complete run-down of the Metabones adapters we rent for the Sony E-Mount.

Canon Mount

Metabones EF to Sony E-Mount (Version I) - This is the original EF to E Mount adapter. It does not support auto focus but will support Image Stabilization on lenses that are compatible. Canon EF-S lenses will not mount. It is best suited for cameras with an APS-C sensor (Like the FS5, FS7, or FS700). Full-frame cameras (A7S II, A7R II) can only be used in the "APS-C size Capture" mode so they are not recommended.

Metabones EF to Sony E-Mount (Mark IV) - This is the most current version of the Metabones adapters. It supports auto-focus and image stabilization with compatible lenses (see Metabones website for full details). It is also currently the only adapter that we rent that will work with EF-S lenses. Last, this adapter adds a matte black coating that reduces internal reflections. This is the adapter of choice for the the A7S II and A7R II, but it can be used with any E-Mount camera.

Metabones EF to Sony E-Mount Speed Booster - The Speed Booster increases the angle of view by 0.71x and the Maximum aperture of the lens by 1 f-stop. For example: the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L would effectively become a 35.5mm f/0.9. It supports auto-focus and image stabilization with compatible lenses (see Metabones website for full details). Canon EF-S lenses will not mount. This adapter is best suited for the APS-C cameras (Like the FS5, FS7, or FS700). Full-frame cameras (A7S II, A7R II) can only be used in the "APS-C size Capture" mode so they are not recommended.

Metabones EF to Sony E-Mount Speed Booster ULTRA - This is an updated version of the above mentioned adapter. The element has been improved and this will provide improved corner sharpness, less distortion, and reduced vignetting. Other than that, it is identical to the original Speed Booster.

Some things to note about all of the Canon Adapters.

- All of the adapters (except the Version I) have a "Green" and "Advanced" Mode. The biggest difference is the "Green" mode supports Autofocus and the "Advanced" mode supports auto magnify. You can read more information about the modes here.

- While the adapters do support most lenses, there are limitations. For example, many lenses released prior to 2006 do not support auto-focus. There are also limitations to the autofocus. We recommend checking with Metabones Website to make sure your lens is compatible and to read about the AF limitations.

Nikon Mount

Metabones Nikon to Sony E-Mount Speed Booster ULTRA - The Speed Booster increases the angle of view by 0.71x and the Maximum aperture of the lens by 1 f-stop. For example: the Nikon 50mm AF-S f/1.4G effectively becomes a 35.5mm f/1.1. This adapter will work with Nikon G or Non-G lenses, including AI, AI-S, and Non-AI lenses. It will not work with newer E series lenses like the Nikon 24-70mm AF-S f/2.8E ED VR or DX-series lenses. The Nikon adapter does not make any sort of electronic connection so auto-focus, electronic aperture control, and VR are not supported.

PL Mount

Metabones PL to Sony E Mount Adapter - Like the Nikon adapter, this lens does not make any sort of electronic contact with the camera. It is best suited for cameras with an APS-C sensor (Like the FS5, FS7, or FS700). Full-frame cameras (A7S II, A7R II) can only be used in the "APS-C size Capture" mode so they are not recommended.
